What are the basics I should know when making an appointment?

  • Per university guidelines, you will need to continue to wear a mask. (We understand that in session, you may become emotional and need to wipe tears and your nose. Emotions are a natural part of therapeutic process, and we encourage you to attend to your needs in these situations. However, whenever reasonable, we ask that clients keep their masks on.)
  • You will need to check in with the wellness associate who will be seated at the entrance of the Turner Student Services Building so that they can check your Safer Illinois boarding pass.
  • To ensure the Counseling Center lobby isn’t overly congested, we’re requesting that you not arrive more than 10 minutes early when you have an appointment.
  • We ask that students complete their paperwork online before they come to the Counseling Center. You will receive the paperwork in an email the day of your appointment.
  • If you are sick the day of your appointment, please call us to reschedule.

Is telehealth still an option?

We will continue offer our group services remotely via Zoom PHI, a HIPAA-compliant video platform, throughout the fall 2021 semester to protect the health of students and staff. We may extend this to the spring 2022 semester.

Your clinician may agree to teletherapy appointments if they determine that is a clear clinical justification for meeting remotely. This will need to be discussed in advance and an in-person meeting cannot be changed to remote last minute.

What if I am outside of Illinois?

The University has partnered with My SSP to provide counseling to students who are currently out-of-state or abroad anf have paid the Health Service Fee. My SSP is available via phone or text.

What will group therapy look like? Will group counseling be held in person or online?

Therapy groups and group screenings will continue to be held online via Zoom PHI for Fall 2021.

Will specialized assessments (alcohol and other drug, eating disorder, academic) screenings be online or in person for Fall 2021?

Once fall semester starts, the Counseling Center will resume nearly all in-person services, including specialized assessments. Please remember, per campus policy, all individuals are required to wear a mask in all campus buildings, including all Counseling Center spaces, regardless of vaccination status. If you have specific reasons for wanting to do an assessment via Zoom PHI, please talk this over with your counselor to see if this is a possibility for your situation.

What if I’m in crisis? Can I come to the Counseling Center?

Yes, once fall semester starts, the Counseling Center will resume nearly all in-person services, including crisis services. Please remember, per campus policy, all individuals are required to wear a mask in all campus buildings, including all Counseling Center spaces, regardless of vaccination status. If possible, we request that you call 217-333-3704 to let us know you’re on your way first.

Will workshops be held in person or online?

For our skill-building offerings, we will be doing a hybrid approach. Please check our website a few weeks after the semester begins for specifics. You can request an in-person or online outreach—depending on what works best for your needs. Please make sure to specify what you’re envisioning when you submit a request.

Will the Counseling Center have an on-site private space/office where students can be seen virtually?

As we return to in-person services for Fall 2021, we will no longer have a space within the Counseling Center for students to do telehealth appointments. We will continue to offer telehealth appointments on a limited basis when appropriate. Students will need to find a private space elsewhere if they do have a telehealth appointment. 

Can I schedule an in-person appointment online?

Yes. We will be changing our appointment procedure for Fall 2021 and you can either schedule your initial appointment either online or by phone. We offer scheduling for initial appointments up to seven days in advance for currently enrolled students. Our online scheduling appointments are available Monday through Friday at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. If these times do not work for your schedule, please feel free to call the Counseling Center at 217-333-3704. We also offer appointments on a same-day basis, so if all our pre-scheduled appointments are filled, there may be other options. 

Do you have evening or weekend hours?

Beginning in early Fall 2021, we plan to resume extended hours on Wednesdays and Thursdays. We will be open until 7 p.m. those days.
