ACE IT
ACE IT (Alcohol Culture Explored: Interactive Training) is a self-guided workshop provided by the University of Illinois Counseling Center’s Alcohol and Other Drug Program. It is one of the required programs offered in collaboration with New Student & Family Experiences.
We offer information and training on alcohol and other drugs from a harm reduction lens. This means that whether you think that substances will be part of your college experience or not, we want to make sure you have a safe plan in place and know some personalized tips for moderation.
What can I expect at ACE IT?
ACE IT’s six modules provide information on alcohol, cannabis, other substances that can be common on college campuses. Most importantly, information about how to keep yourself and others safe is available. These modules are presented by peer educators who help design this program. We also share a lot of campus resources and places where you can find more information if you’re interested.
Why is this program mandatory?
Training on alcohol and other drug prevention and education is required by the Drug Free Schools and Campuses Act (DFSCA) of 1989. The University of Illinois complies with this federal act by providing ACE IT to all incoming freshman and transfer students under the age of 21. For students who choose not to use substances, this workshop covers information about local emergency resources and the Amnesty Policy in case of situations where they may be an active bystander and need to assist another person due to alcohol or other drugs.
How do I register for a workshop?
You can access ACE IT through Canvas and then click on OPEN LEARNING – ACE IT – Required Alcohol and Other Drug Workshop. It takes about 45 minutes to complete, but you don’t have to finish it all at once. Students have until September 30 to take the workshop; we will automatically know when you’re done.
When is ACE IT available?
The workshop will be open in Canvas starting July 8 and available until September 30. It can be accessed 24 hours a day during this time.
Is ACE IT accessible?
Yes. This workshop is hosted in Canvas, which is compatible with screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, TalkBack) and has image descriptions in all available locations. Videos have been manually subtitled by a trained staff member and a transcript is also available in Microsoft Word. More details on Canvas and accessibility are available.
If you are a new student with a disability and are not yet registered with Disability Resources and Educational Services (DRES), please visit their website to complete an application for services. Any questions can be directed to disability@illinois.edu or 217-333-1970.
Does ACE IT place holds on student accounts?
No, our office doesn’t place holds on student accounts, so your workshop completion status will not interfere with course registration.
If you find that you’re having trouble registering for classes, it’s likely related to the Title IX Office’s online program, Voices for Change. You can find more information about completing Voices for Change here.
I turn 21 during the fall semester. Do I have to take ACE IT?
If you will be under 21 at any time during the Fall 2024 semester, you have been automatically enrolled in ACE IT. Beyond legal alcohol policies, this workshop provides information on campus resources, amnesty in cases of emergency, and how to help others.
