Racism, the First American Pandemic: From Slavery to the Current Political Climate

“Racism, the First American Pandemic: From Slavery to the Current Political Climate” Deidre Weathersby (she, her, hers). Ph.D., Kamau Grantham (he, him, his), Ph.D., and Sankofa Black Student Outreach Team, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

While the world is grappling with the novel COVID-19 pandemic, Black communities across the nation are simultaneously feeling the negative impact(s) of racism and the myth of white supremacy. Health care disparities and medical discrimination are the point at which the two pandemics intersect with what has been proven to be devastating effects to the Black community. How are American pandemics impacting mental heath care service providers and their clients? What can be done to quell the mental health implications of medical racism, political bigotry, and police brutality? In our program, we aim to address these questions through a mixed media learning experience focusing on dialogue and education.
